Zixi: Transforming Public Internet More Reliable

The media and Internet space are going through a tectonic shift that is just at the beginning. The world of media transport is going to terrestrial IP, and there are inherent challenges in these technologies, especially at scale. The big challenge is that both fiber and Internet are not clean and have issues such as jitter and packet loss. This is where Zixi comes into the picture as a game-changer, having made fiber, IP satellite, 4G/5G and public internet more reliable than traditional methods. “It has been a challenge for the industry to make that transition cost-effectively. One of the things that Zixi has been so successful atover the last 16 years is having automated so much of the process of implementing, orchestrating, and engineering these solutions so that it becomes easy to implement and easy to manage. Our solution becomes an exception-based monitoring solution with self-diagnostics, and the platform is future-proofed and interoperable with 18 industrytransport protocols,” begins Gordon Brooks, Executive Chairman & CEO, Zixi.

Zixi ensures network scalability and adaptability in evolving network environments by utilizing redundancy which is typically primary, backup, and occasionally tertiary, and that’s over any kind of IP network. The company also has patented hitless failover technology that creates one coherent stream out of multiple stream fragments whether that be on the internet, fiber or 5G, using a DNA sequence alignment algorithm. As a result, this ensures that there is no perceptible impact if a packet is lost or if one of the streams goes down. There are several things Zixi does when it comes to scaling these systems. The Software-Defined Video Platform (SDVP) is port efficient, as opposed to other solutions that may require a port or an entire VM per stream, so the Zixi systems use a minimal number of ports and VMs even at a massive scale. “On contribution, we bond different IP networks to maximize available bandwidth that allows us to use the combined capacity from all the available networks ensuring error-free transmission over unreliable networks,” says Brooks.

Zixi software is extremely efficient as well, which is great from a sustainability as well as a cost perspective.  Version 17 of the SDVP with the Zixi Protocol, which is slated for public release in September, is 14x more compute efficient than other industry solutions.  The company’s offerings are network efficient, includingcontent aware software which compresses null packets until decoded which typically results in about 75% savings, requiring less network capacity that in turn gives room to retransmitting meaningful content on a highly lossy network. When egressing these streams, Zixi will cut egress costs in half while delivering the content to post-decode at the original bitrate.

Today, Zixi is ultra-focused on sustainability because it’s the right thing to do, and with the efficiencies it has the added benefit of saving customers money. The company’s strength is in its expertise, coming from years of experience as it pioneered transporting ultra-low latency live video over IP, demonstrated by its Emmy award-winning SDVP and patented features. . The Zixi platform has been tested and deployed by all global major industry players, so with 1000+ media customers and 400 integrated partners Zixi is the very safe choice and has led to having a 75%+ market share. Zixi’s software platform is much more than just a protocol and is many years ahead of the competition, has been widely adopted by thousands of customers that have been using it for many years at scale and has proven to work with 99.999% reliability. We have 20,000+ live channels and 100,000+ sporting events moving across to our customers, and as an example, this enables sports leagues to deliver content easily and cost effectively to all the digital takers across the globe using a single platform. “We are expanding in different directions to address industry needs with additions to our product sets, new features, solving unique problems, and reaching new markets. We added our transcoding engine a few years ago and have since developed our IDP which analyzes 9 billion telemetry data points daily, helping customers automate their solutions,” concludes Brooks.
