Zuckerverse. Timesuck. Faceplant. They’re just a handful of the ideas floating around the internet in response to allegations that Facebook is planning a rebranding with a new group name. Of course, the corporation refused to comment on rumors or speculation, but the Twitterati didn’t seem to mind.
The discussion ranged from sensible to ridiculous to bizarre.
One of the more sober trending choices was “meta,” which alluded to Facebook’s rumored desire to choose a name that focused on the metaverse, a virtual world where users can hang out.
Bookface, Facegram, Facetagram, FreeFace, FreeTalk, and World Changer are all terms for the same thing.
On the wilder side, Twitter user Dave Pell made a parallel with Kanye West, the singer who recently changed his name to “Ye.” He commented, “It would be amazing if Facebook changed its name to Ye.”
Several amusing suggestions echoed online suspicion that the claimed rebrand was motivated by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s desire to make the social media platform “cool” again.
A report on the Verge news site claimed that a newly called entity would act as a parent for all of the company’s brands, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and would reflect an emphasis on virtual and augmented reality.
