The AI model, called “BaGuaLu” or “alchemist’s pot,” was tested on the National Supercomputing Center’s latest generation Sunway supercomputer.
According to the report, which cited Chinese academics, the AI model with 174 trillion parameters may be used for a variety of applications ranging from driverless vehicles to scientific research.
The data was given in April at a virtual meeting of Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming 2022, an international conference sponsored in the United States by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
As a result, the Newest Generation Sunway supercomputer is on par with Frontier, the most recent machine constructed by the United States Department of Energy.
The Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is the world’s fourth most powerful. Nonetheless, the researchers claim that the most recent demonstration puts it on par with the US Frontier, which tops the list.
Sunway was named the most powerful machine between 2016 and 2018 in a list of the Top 500 supercomputers. The list’s performance data is no longer provided by Chinese institutions. China still has 173 supercomputers in the Top 500 rankings.
According to the article, the Sunway supercomputer has more than 37 million CPU cores, which is four times the number of the Frontier supercomputer in the United States. Furthermore, the system contains nine petabytes of RAM, which is equivalent to more than two million HD movies.
According to one researcher, the latest Sunway’s power allowed it to perform parallel computing in a manner similar to human thought, describing it as “like eating while watching television.”
The researchers claimed to have acquired “good performance” from the unprecedented “brain-scale” AI model by combining critical technologies such as hardware-specific intra-node optimization and hybrid parallel approaches on an unprecedented scale.
According to publicly available information, the new machine, like its predecessor, uses custom-designed processors with unique energy-saving and communication bandwidth characteristics.
