According to Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), the Chinese hacking organization APT 27, which has been accused of attacking Western government institutions, has begun targeting German corporations in industries such as pharmaceuticals and technology.
In a circular to enterprises, the BfV stated that in addition to stealing trade secrets and intellectual property, hackers may be attempting to penetrate customers’ and service providers’ networks in order to attack multiple companies at once.
The moniker APT 27 is an alias for a Chinese hacker organization known as the “Emissary Panda,” which is thought to target foreign embassies and critical sectors, according to the BfV’s annual constitutional protection report from 2019.
The US and its allies accused China of conducting a global cyberespionage campaign last year. The allegation has been refuted by China.
