A major manufacturing shift will move the next-generation Envision from China to GM’s Fairfax plant, strengthening local output and supporting North American supply.
Kansas City, Kansas, 23 January 2026 — General Motors (GM) is preparing to shift production of the next-generation Buick Envision from China to the United States starting in 2028, marking a significant change in where the compact SUV will be assembled for the North American market.
GM confirmed on January 22 that the Buick Envision will be built at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. The Envision has been manufactured in China for North America since 2017, with vehicles shipped overseas and sold through Buick’s dealership network.
A new home for the next Envision
Fairfax Assembly is already undergoing major changes. The plant currently produces the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt, but only for a limited run. It is scheduled to begin producing the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox in 2027. Once the Buick Envision joins the lineup in 2028, it will share a platform with the Equinox, allowing GM to build multiple vehicles more efficiently at the same facility.
According to GM, Envision models assembled at Fairfax will be sold in North America. The company also noted that production in China may continue, but mainly for other markets outside the U.S.
Investment and jobs remain a key focus.
GM says this shift is part of its continued effort to strengthen manufacturing in the United States. A company spokesperson stated that GM has announced $5.5 billion in new investments across its U.S. manufacturing sites over the last year, positioning the company for long-term production growth and stability.
The move also comes at a time when automakers are reworking their plans due to shifting customer demand, especially around electric vehicles, and the need for more flexible production strategies.
Production adjustments across North America
GM has made several recent changes to its manufacturing footprint beyond Kansas.
In Mexico, GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant reduced operations and laid off 1,900 workers on January 16 as it moved down to one shift. This facility currently manufactures multiple models, including the Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Optiq, and the electric Honda Prologue.
Meanwhile, GM has already announced plans to move production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer to Spring Hill, Tennessee, by 2027, another sign of how the company is reshaping production locations to meet business needs.
What happens next
For now, Buick Envision production in China remains unchanged, and vehicles will continue to be shipped to the U.S. until the new model launches from Fairfax Assembly. GM says it will share more product and timing details closer to launch.
Buick’s compact SUV has remained an important part of the brand’s lineup. GM sold 41,924 Buick Envisions in 2025, showing steady demand in a competitive SUV market.
Fairfax Assembly has also experienced workforce changes. In October 2025, the plant placed 900 workers on indefinite layoff after ending production of the Cadillac XT4 and the Chevrolet Malibu. With the Equinox arriving in 2027 and the Envision in 2028, the plant is expected to take on a renewed role in GM’s U.S. production plans.
